Resources are being stretched thin at a Tukwila church after seeing an increase in migrants looking for help.
In recent weeks, more than 300 Venezuelan and Angolan migrants have made their way to Riverton Park United Methodist Church. In light of the recent increase, Medical Teams International and Microsoft employees got together to build and deliver 400 hygiene kits to the migrant families and individuals at the church.
Officials with Medical Teams International said the kits will be stocked with essential supplies like a toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo and deodorant.Pastor Jan Bolerjack with the church said there are many families with children and infants. She added all of them are legally seeking asylum in the U.S. and many of the migrants are fleeing violence and conflict in their countries.
Bolerjack previously told KOMO News she is waiting for help from the government but said she understands getting those resources takes time. “We’re expecting it soon,” Bolerjack said. “I know that those wheels crank slowly and sometimes they’re just working to put things into their budget next year, so we’re not going to see some of that until December.”
