Both directions of Interstate 5 in Tumwater reopened Tuesday morning after a semi-truck overturned Monday night.

The crash closed both directions of the interstate for more than five hours before the southbound lanes reopened around 4:30 a.m. The northbound lanes reopened to traffic just before 7:30 a.m. Tuesday.the Washington State Department of Ecology responded to the scene to assess hazmat concerns “involving corrosive substances that were a part of the load.”, formerly known as Twitter, that no hazmat issues were suspected after crews inspected the overturned semi-truck.
Although all northbound lanes reopened to traffic, the WSDOT said drivers should prepare for backups and congestion to continue through the morning commute. The department said backups in the area extended to 93rd Avenue at 7:25 a.m. Crews had to confirm there wasn't a spill after the semi-truck was flipped upright before the interstate could reopen to traffic. Officials have not said what “corrosive substances” the truck was carrying.The WSP, WSDOT, Department of Ecology and the Olympia Fire Department responded to the scene.
