Woo’s relationship with Hollywood was difficult as the studios imposed too many limitations on his work process, and he felt that he could not make his films the way he wanted to. What is it that appeals to you about depicting violence? Were you influenced by American directors like Sam Peckinpah, who directed the violent Western The Wild Bunch, in this regard?
Did you encounter much violence during your childhood – I know you are from a poor family and grew up in a rough neighbourhood. Did your work for martial arts legend Chang Cheh , as assistant director, influence your view of violence in movies?
