SFGATE columnist Drew Magary took in an A's game and was reminded of just how fun going to a ballpark can be, especially if — like John Fisher — you have no vested interest in the outcome.
. His contempt for having to merely stage these games is evident, and his neglect is superhuman. Unprecedented, perhaps.
Oakland A's fans in the bleacher section hang banners asking for team owner John Fisher to sell the Athletics during an MLB game between the Oakland A's and the Texas Rangers at the Oakland Coliseum in Oakland, Calif., on May 11, 2023.I arrive at the Coliseum BART stop and approach the long caged footbridge to the stadium. This footbridge used to be lined with vendors selling food and knockoff swag.
“The county's messing with the city, the city is messing with the county,” he complains, “It's just like regular America. It's all politics. Nobody gets along.” I walk around the concourse as the evening’s first pitch whispers its way into existence. The stadium barely has a pulse. The stands are fallow. The only packed section is filled with a group of elementary school students, here on a field trip. Virtually all of the upper-level concession stands are shuttered. All of the fried-food kiosks — which once sold fried Oreos, fried jalapeño poppers and other state fair delights — are gone.
And you know what? I’m having fun, too. Do you know how enjoyable it is to go to a baseball game and have your run of the joint? There’s no waiting in line for food here or trading elbows with drunks just to take a piss. I can shoot the breeze with a bartender without anyone behind me growing impatient. Not a single guard asks to see my ticket stub as I float from one section to another. My hopes of getting a stray foul ball are actually realistic.
