I had an abortion at the age of 22, when the procedure was still forbidden. I remember the horror stories flying around about abortions, the women who died on operating tables or during a back-alley abortion, the body parts of a young victim found floating in the Hudson.

I sit down on a pew in the cool, shadowy interior of St. Patrick’s and am filled with a sense of peace.
