In the final on Monday, the 27-year-old finished ahead of China’s Lu Yuting and defending champion Edidiong Ofonime Odiong , ending the Republic’s 49-year wait for an athletics gold medal. But Pereira was unaffected and as she settled back into the starting blocks, all that went through her mind was “execute, execute, execute”.

“I really fell in love with this sport again last year and this year and I’m just embracing every opportunity I get, including this one.”Her coach Luis Cunha, who had been watching the race from the warm-up track at a nearby stadium, was proud of what Pereira had achieved. “The entire season was perfect and to finish it with a gold in the Asian Games is something incredible.”
