I’m a vegan landlord—and I banned tenants from cooking meat.
Of course, this is what a landlord would say, but Lerer tells me the requirement has never been a problem for his tenants—nor made it difficult to rent the apartment. He says it’s never been his goal to change the way his tenants think about food: “I’m not going to try to convince people to become vegan.” But, he says, some renters have seen the restriction as an opportunity to cut back on their meat consumption, and many of those who did eat meat ordered a lot of takeout anyway.
We are both vegan and we lived together on the top floor of the Fort Greene building after we bought it in 2007. Soon after we renovated the place, we had a tenant living downstairs who liked to cook fish, and it affected us terribly. We needed to leave the house for three or four hours every time she did it. We made a decision then that we’re not going to hurt our own quality of life for the purpose of money.
We thought it was going to be difficult, but it wasn’t that hard. Young people especially are much more open to it, and some of them don’t even cook—they order a lot of takeout and so they don’t seem to really care.I’ve been vegan for 14 years and I was vegetarian for 20 years before that. I was surprised that, actually, some of our tenants were like, “Oh, wow. It’s a challenge. Now I’m going to start to cook myself only vegetarian food.” Or, “Oh, I always wanted to try. That’s going to push me.” I had a tenant in the building I manage in Bed-Stuy who came in as vegetarian and left as vegan. We became friends and I started talking about veganism, about animals, and all of that story.
