Meek Mill opens up about last week’s news, the new documentary, and the development of his music and activism

was running a little late for a press gathering on Wednesday. Or, rather, his meeting withupstairs at Roc Nation’s Chelsea headquarters was running a little over. The week before, in the same offices, the Philadelphia rapper hada deal with the Jay-Z-founded entertainment company to head up a new record label. The same day that news broke, a 2008 conviction on drug and gun charges that kept Meek on probation and in and out of prison was overturned.

The documentary covers your drug use and anxiety during the time you were on probation, due to the stress and uncertainty. I always said, on a corner in our neighborhood of Philadelphia, you got 100 people that rap. Before you get money to go to the studio you start off just rapping on the corner, exchanging bars. Next thing you probably make a few dollars and be able to go to the studio. Just seeing my steps from rapping on the corner to the studio to stage and being able to see that in one project is inspiring to me.It gave my music content.

I’m gonna still rap about it because it is affecting me directly. I’ve got family members caught up in the system. I probably take two, three jail calls from technical violators every day. They have families. Some of my little cousins’ dads are in prison due to technical violations. Some of them are actually in prison because they actually did stuff. So it still affects me on a daily basis. You have a tour coming up with Future.

I think mine had been going on for a long time. In the industry I think everyone knew about my situation. There’ll always be a time where I could be doing well, new album out, touring. Or Meek Mill is back in jail. But there was never a crime placed on it at all. It was always Meek Mill violated probation. Every time I came home I came back stronger and stronger and kept on growing it. I think I got to his high point where, c’mon, two, four years, that was just an outrage to our community.
