Matthew Burgess, who sued San Diego over actions of police officers at a downtown George Floyd protest, requested a face-to-face meeting as part of a settlement
, is to ensure demonstrations stay peaceful, prevent criminal activities, control traffic and “facilitate the safe exercise of an individual or group’s First Amendment rights.”
The protest at the center of the lawsuit unfolded throughout the day on May 31, 2020, at a time when huge numbers of Americans had taken to the streets in cities across the nation to protest the police killing of Floyd.demonstrators had faced off with police officers and sheriff’s deputies in neighboring La Mesa
Burgess, a 31-year-old attorney, said he hadn’t attended a protest since high school, about 10 years earlier, but it felt important to him to attend this one after seeing the video of Floyd’s death. He went by himself.Shortly after getting downtown, he said he was watching a line of officers face off with a line of protesters on Broadway. That’s when he saw an officer at the end of that line hit or push a woman.
