The bus was selected for enhanced scrutiny following a risk assessment by ICA's Integrated Targeting Centre (ITC), a 24/7 data analytics unit that evaluates travelers, conveyances, and cargo before arrival.
High-risk cases are flagged for immediate checks at checkpoints. In this instance, the ITC's profiling led officers to focus on the bus, where they discovered the cigarettes concealed in a specially modified engine compartment. The driver, a 40-year-old Malaysian man, was arrested, and the case was handed over to Singapore Customs for further investigation. Singapore imposes severe penalties for offenses involving duty-unpaid goods under the Customs Act and the Goods and Services Tax Act.
Offenders face fines of up to 40 times the evaded duty, imprisonment for up to six years, or both.
