A recent ICE report revealed that hundreds of thousands of individuals under its supervision have criminal convictions. While this data sparked controversy and accusations of lax border security, it's important to note that many are not in ICE custody but may be held by state or local authorities.
Republican Rep. Tony Gonzales obtained information from Immigration and Customs Enforcement ( ICE ) revealing that 662,556 individuals under ICE supervision have either been convicted of crimes or face criminal charges as of July 21st. While nearly 15,000 were in ICE custody, the majority – 647,572 – were not. This data includes individuals found guilty of serious offenses like homicide (13,099), sexual assault (15,811), weapons offenses (13,423), and stolen vehicles (2,663).
The Department of Homeland Security clarified that the figures encompass decades and those not in ICE custody may be held by state or local agencies. This distinction was not made clear in ICE's report to Gonzales. The numbers sparked controversy during the presidential campaign, with former President Trump highlighting them as evidence of Biden's lax border security policies
