PRAIA, Cape Verde: The World Health Organization has estimated that disease strips hundreds of millions of dollars from Africa's economic output, as the burden of untreated disease hugely outweighs the potential expense of healthcare.
"This is a huge cost to the Region and, indeed, for Africa as a whole," said WHO Regional Director for Africa Matshidiso Moeti in the report. Five countries - Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Nigeria, South Africa and Tanzania - accounted for almost half of the work hours lost to poor health.
