Researchers analyzed MAIT cells in mice and humans to understand how the local environment affects their development and function. They found that the tissue environment influences MAIT cell programs, with different subsets dominating in different organs. The external environment also plays a role, as seen in pet store mice. Human MAIT cells showed less heterogeneity and differed more in the periphery. These findings confirm the impact of the environment on MAIT cell development and function.
MAIT cells in mice and humans were analyzed to understand how the local environment affects their development and function. Single-cell RNA sequencing and phenotypic and metabolic analyses revealed that MAIT cell programs originated in the thymus but were also influenced by the tissue environment. Murine lung had dominant IL-17 -producing MAIT cells, while the liver had more IFN-γ-producing MAIT1 cells. External environment influenced the presence of MAIT17 cells in pet store mice.
