Sam Green's newest immersive documentary, now playing at Film Forum, breaks the conventional rules in exploring how we perceive, process and feel the world around us through sound.

Make your contribution now and help Gothamist thrive in 2023.A new documentary called “32 Sounds” opens today atsays he knew from the start how his film, about sound and how it affects us, was going to end – and then had to work out how he’d get to that point. While watching films in public is a communal experience, some screenings of the documentary involve audience members cocooned in headphones, with the sound being mixed live in the theater.

Poet Fred Moten talks about this in the film, saying, “The most sort of dominant sonic experiences I have are these ghost sounds, the sounds of people who are gone.” One noise Green encountered while making his film proved revelatory. Composer Philip Glass was playing one of his piano pieces for Green, when suddenly a fly started buzzing around the microphone. Most directors might have yelled “cut,” but not Green.
