Judy is uneven, writes melvillematic, but Renée Zellweger is doing great work
, and the actual meat and potatoes of the film is the series of sold-out concert performances that the singer, whose voice by that point was worse for wear, gave in London in 1968. The performances themselves were an unfavorable compromise: a last-ditch effort to make enough money for Garland to finally settle down with her two young children.
The film moves back and forth between the moment of this tour and Garland’s early days with MGM, detailing with savvy concision the harsh pill regimen she’d been forced to undertake, the near-starvation she endured to stay slim, the brutal rehearsal and publicity routines that became her entire life. When she pops pills as an adult, in, we’re meant to think back to her mother feeding her pills as a kid.
