| May 2, 2022, 10:16 p.m.A brief filed by the Utah Attorney General’s office on behalf of Lt. Gov. Deidre Henderson contends that a lawsuit alleging the newly drawn maps deprive voters of fair representation raises political issues and are not matters that should be decided by the court.
Attorneys for the Legislature are expected to submit their own response to the lawsuit on behalf of lawmakers sometime Monday afternoon. As a result, the lawsuit argues, the Legislature has deprived voters of their constitutional right to meaningful representation and to participate in a free and fair election. The suit asks the court to declare the maps invalid after the 2022 election and to direct the Legislature to draw new maps that do not violate those constitutional guarantees.challenging congressional or legislative maps over either partisan or racial gerrymandering, according to data from the Brennan Center for Justice.
