Why are Americans so united in their optimistic approach to technology? A new study shows surprising links. Story from CKinstitute

, Americans’ confidence in technology is one distinct area where the familiar segments of the American population give way to unified expression. This cohesion is best exemplified in the finding that 92% of Americans indicated their belief that innovation is a big part of American culture and history: a near unanimous result.

Diverse though we may be, the inalienable rights enumerated and embedded in the Constitution hold a special place in the hearts of all Americans. These common values and rights provide the foundation for our collective understanding and experience of technology. In examining these trends, we can begin to understand why American confidence in technology spans generational, geographic and party lines.

But medical innovation is not limited to new therapies, pharmaceuticals or surgical techniques. Technology has also enabled expanded access to physical health services and virtual support, as well. New survey data indicates that fully one-fifth of respondents have reported using the burgeoning telemedicine industry where they receive clinical care and diagnosis from doctors online or through the phone.

As a result of these developments over the last hundred years, more people have reported increased leisure time and the ability to retire in old age. There has been a measurable effect on our pocketbooks, too. In 1929, Americans would have spent about 60% of their disposable income on basic life necessities. Today, that spending is down from 60% to about one-third of workers’ incomes in 2016.

For deployed military personnel, the ability to video chat with spouses and children has made painful separations a little more comforting [2]. Senior citizens in rural areas are using the power of online connection to erode layers of isolation and loneliness [3]. And the Mormon Church is even revising its own guidelines to let deployed missionaries connect with home more often [4].
