Most want new restrictive gun legislation and nearly all Pennsylvanians support background checks and red flag laws. So why don’t we have them?

A sign signals the public to shelter in place during an active shooter situation on Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2023, in Lewiston, Maine. On Oct. 25, I received a text from my brother in Maine. “I don’t want you to worry. You might have seenat the bowling alley. I’m safe, sheltering at home.” My brother works near the bowling alley – a place I’d been a dozen times with my own kids.

We’ve shuddered and wrung our hands about a heavily armed white man who’d obtained an arsenal legally and just started shooting. There are hundreds of dead and wounded each year – but there must be tens of thousands of us who have a loved one moments or meters away from a similar fate. I don’t live in Maine or in New Mexico . I live in Pennsylvania. The keystone state is no stranger to mass shootings. But, like most Americans, Pennsylvanians are divided over the cause of this phenomena. The majority – and yes, it’s the majority – don’t need to know the cause before we do something. – aka the gun lobby – have stifled the true message? No, it’s not about gun rights. It’s the humanity’s rights. Guns aren’t more important that people and people are dying.
