India v Pakistan in the Cricket World Cup is the biggest sporting event in the world this weekend. Here is everything you need to know about the clash of two of cricket's titans in Manchester on Sunday.

Share to twitterIndia's captain Virat Kohli celebrates after winning the Cricket World Cup match between India and Australia at the Oval in London, Sunday, June 9, 2019.An audience that is almost ten times that of the Super Bowl. Almost a hundred times the NBA Finals. Only the World Cup Final and the UEFA Champions League Final will top it this year. And yet, in the United States, Sunday’s match will barely raise a ripple.

Imran Asghar, one of the organizers of the Stani Army Pakistan supporter’s group, agrees. “A Pakistan v India game means everything to all Pakistanis,” he says. “People who have zero interest or knowledge about the game get gripped by the fever. The whole occasion is enormous.” One does not have to be a scholar of South Asian history to know that there is a political element to the rivalry. Cricket itself is a sport defined by colonialism and all 10 nations at the 2019 World Cup are former British colonies .

Pakistan's Mohammad Amir celebrates after taking the wicket of Australia's Mitchell Starc during the Cricket World Cup match between Australia and Pakistan at the County Ground in Taunton, south west England, Wednesday, June 12, 2019. For Imran Asghar, a British Pakistani, the resonance of the sporting event should be strong enough to overcome any political overtones, especially among the diaspora fans who will pack out Old Trafford.

India have impressed at the World Cup so far, disposing of South Africa and Australia handily, before seeing their game with New Zealand fall foul of the famous English summer. Pakistan also lost a game to the weather and were defeated by the West Indies and Australia, but produced a miraculous performance to beat tournament favorites England. They will need to repeat those heroics to win against their greatest rivals.
