KUALA LUMPUR: Following a joint trade mission to the European Union , Malaysia and Indonesia criticised the European Union Deforestation Regulation as"inherently discriminatory and punitive in nature".
“ expressed their hope that the EU would observe the principles of transparency, non-discrimination, consistent with World Trade Organisation rules and regulations, particularly in trading palm oil and its products,” said the statement. The joint trade mission to the EU was undertaken by Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister and Commodities Minister Fadillah Yusof and Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto.
Follow-up discussions to what has been discussed and agreed upon will also be held between EU leaders with the Malaysian and Indonesian ambassadors, said Mr Fadillah. The EUDR makes it an obligation for companies to ensure that commodities sold in the EU do not come from deforested land. It affects seven specific commodities - namely palm oil, cocoa, coffee, soy, wood, rubber and cattle - and products made from these commodities as well as their derivates.
