JAKARTA - The arrest last Friday of the chairman of United Development Party , M. Romahurmuziy, who has since resigned from that post, has once again cast an unfavourable light on Indonesia's Religious Affairs Ministry. In 2005, then-religious affairs minister Said Agil al-Munawar was sentenced to five years in prison for the embezzlement of haj funds causing state losses of 719 billion rupiah .
Mr Joko and his running mate, Muslim cleric Ma'ruf Amin are facing off against presidential contender Prabowo Subianto and his running mate Sandiaga Uno in the April 17 election. The PPP chairman is alleged to have accepted 300 million rupiah in payments from two individuals, Muafaq Wirahadi and Haris Hasanuddin, who wished to get promoted within the ranks of the ministry's regional office in East Java.
Following the arrest, KPK investigators on Monday raided PPP's headquarters and the office of Minister Lukman at the Religious Affairs Ministry, both in Central Jakarta. Mr Febri, however, was quick to add that investigators would not rush to conclusions on whether Lukman may have played a role in the case implicating Romahurmuziy.
