Before I became a beauty editor, I would never have imagined a 22-step bedtime routine would be something I’d perform willingly. Previously, my nighttime regimen consisted of a sole Neutrogena makeup wipe, my makeup bag was still lined with years-old drugstore bronzers and blushes, and I certainly didn’t have a go-to esthetician or dermatologist.

is, in fact, real—a time for our skin to experience its peak restorative capabilities as our cells regenerate quicker at night. The second and most important reason is to have a moment to slow down—a reminder that I must care for myself in order to show up as my best. It’s honestly become quite therapeutic. What started off as a simple cleanse, has turned into a 60 to 90-minute sequence that, yes, I do partake in every single day in some variation.

Safe to say, I started this ritual because it made me feel good, but I began to wonder if it was superfluous or actually beneficial. So, as I prepared this story, I asked dermatologistto share her candid thoughts on my step-by-step bedtime routine. Use her feedback to inform your own regimen—or don’t! I understand that not everyone wants this many steps. Beauty editors have to, for the sake of journalism, try multitudes of products to explore what’s trending and worth buying.
