I recognized the relief on the face of Sanders’s staff when the state was finally called. It was an expression worn by front-runners. The wins are always closer than you want, but a win is a win, and Sanders appeared well on his way to Milwaukee.
So was Nina Turner. If you haven’t seen her speak, it’s something to behold. Respectfully referred to as “SNT” by Sanders’s staff, Turner was at the heart of the Sanders campaign. She does not give speeches; she delivers sermons that consume her. The stamina it would take to repeat her performance time after time, day after day could only be fueled by someone on a crusade. We spoke after the event about what motivated her to be part of Sanders’s movement.
There was no dramatic change in Biden’s strategy that accounted for the turnaround. On one level you could say the Biden team was right all along that he was the obvious choice. But it’s also true that it took a political miracle of Democrats coming together to make him so.
