AN INSTANT AusOpen CLASSIC! Australian Open favourite Daniil Medvedev comes back from two sets down, saves a match point and produces a stunning four-hour, 42-minute comeback triumph. 📝 MORE:
If Medvedev goes on to win the Australian Open he’ll be the first man to do it after saving match point since compatriot Marat Safin in 2005.It was Medvedev’s second career win from two sets down, following his triumph over Marin Cilic at Wimbledon last year, while he famously came back from two sets down in the 2019 US Open final against Rafael Nadal but lost in the fifth.
Late in the fourth set Medvedev double-faulted to go down match point but backed his serve again to save it; he went on to break Auger-Aliassime instead, and on a fourth set point force a decider.Medvedev held to love to begin the match, delivering four aces in his first two service games. “That’s a mighty serve. That’s the risk. There’s the reward. It’s 174km/h out wide over the high part of the net. And he got the free point. Those will be some double faults from serves like that. That’s a high-risk scenario,” he explained.
In the first set tiebreak, it was Medvedev who erred first at 2-2 with a double-fault; he gained the mini-break back with ridiculous defence in a 24-shot rally two points later. But then another bizarre double-fault gifted the mini-break right back, and a wicked return quickly gave FAA three set points. He converted the second for a 7-6 opening set.
“There are a few chirpy people throwing a few lines to Medvedev ... he’s starting to get aggravated by the crowd.”FAA then consolidated for 3-0 with Jim Courier suggesting the other Australian Open contenders would be “pulling their chairs a little closer to the TV screens in their hotel rooms right now” in expectation of a potential upset.“He thinks it is poor etiquette by the crowd and he has said it many, many times in press. And that just shows you where this match stands.
FAA earned the first break point of the third set at 30-40, 1-1 but Medvedev saved it with a backhand shot - eerily similar to a shot that missed on break point in the second set. “He has been frustrated at himself. He has been frustrated at his racquet. At the ballkids and the tournament referee, at the roof, at the weather, at the crowd. A little bit of everything.”
Early in the fourth set Medvedev complained of the screens in the arena being changed just before one of his returns from a clean shot to one of a fan.
