Salary cap management is all about value. So what price do you put on players who can change a game in 20 minutes?
Connor Watson isn’t the first athlete to be blessed with versatility, but bemoan the curse of utility.
He’s now poised for an Origin debut because of it, and would have been two weeks ago too if not for an untimely throat injury. But in a mark of the man McInnes is, and the impact players numbered 14-17 have had at the Sharks this year, he’s emphatic when it comes to a true interchange specialist’s value in the modern game.
“So you ask about value and what you pay someone, you can’t limit what you’d pay a guy like that, or anyone, based on starting or the bench, because they’re still elite.Leniu has started just five of his 88 NRL games, averaging 24 minutes a week across his first four full seasons at Penrith, coming off the bench in each of their three consecutive grand final wins.
Then there’s Watson, who has averaged 56 minutes across a 135-game career with 71 of them beginning on the bench. The rest have been spread across fullback, centre, five-eighth, hooker and lock.that Trent Robinson has elevated him to starting lock and hooker roles, along with the everywhere impact Watson has always packed off the bench – averaging 38 tackles, 10 runs and 57 touches a game to earn his Origin debut.
Watson now eases that scenario, stressing he is comfortable defending at centre having done so at different points in his career, especially at Newcastle when he and Sione Mata’utia would swap positions without the ball., and his ability to still defend out wide at 30 will go under the microscope if he’s required to do so at the MCG.
