People who catch COVID-19 could soon only be required to stay at home for five days under a shake-up to quarantine rules. COVID19 7NEWS
Currently, people who test positive for COVID-19 in NSW and Victoria are required to isolate from everyone else for at least ten days.
Early research suggests the highly-infectious new Omicron variant may cause milder illnesses than earlier versions of the coronavirus. But the sheer number of people becoming infected, and therefore having to stay at home, crushes the ability of some businesses to stay open. Virus-related staff shortages have led to closures, the cancellation of flights, and now threaten industries including health care, restaurants and retail.
State and territory leaders are also considering whether isolation periods for close contacts of positive cases can be reduced to ease the burden on businesses. The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced the five-day change for American COVID cases without symptoms on Tuesday.
The agency said the guidance is in line with growing evidence that people with the virus are most infectious in the two days before and three days after symptoms develop.“CDC’s updated recommendations for isolation and quarantine balance what we know about the spread of the virus and the protection provided by vaccination and booster doses,” CDC Director Rochelle Walensky said in a statement.
