The Schoharie Limo Crash on October 6, 2018 set off an immense effort to enact regulation, figure out where systems failed, and prevent a future vehicular trage
dy of this scale. Only one individual to date has faced any criminal repercussions for the crash. But the blame for the crash rests on the shoulders of several key groups, at least according to federal investigators.
It was slapped with an "out of service" sticker; owner Nauman Hussain has been accused of removing it. The DOT says issues identified in its first inspection were never fixed. Even a year before the final report, the NTSB recommended lap and shoulder belts for all seated passengers in new vehicles modified as limousines. There were seat belts in that 2001 Ford Excursion involved in the Schoharie crash, but the seats were not from the original vehicle. It had been modified with the wheelbase significantly lengthened.
--finding the DMV and DOT fell short of duties when it came to keeping the limo off the road; but there was no evidence of actual misconduct from those departments.
