The only operational power plant in Gaza will stop operating at 2 p.m. local time Wednesday because it has run out of fuel, the head of the Palestinian enclave's energy authority said. Israel has imposed a total siege on Gaza in response to attacks from the ruling militant group Hamas that killed over 1,000 civilians.
The Israeli government said it would cut off supplies of fuel, food and other essentials to the enclave, in answer to the assault. Gaza has been largely sealed off to the outside world since 2007 when Hamas took power and Israel closed its border. The enclave has been pounded by retaliatory strikes from Israel since Saturday, killing 950 people and injuring over 5,000.
