Israel launched ground raids in southern Lebanon after intense fighting erupted with Hezbollah, marking a significant escalation in the conflict. The Israeli military deployed paratroops and commandos against Hezbollah targets, citing threats to Israeli communities. This comes after devastating airstrikes against Hezbollah leadership and as Israel prepares for a potential full-scale invasion.

Smoke rises from the site of an Israel i airstrike that targeted a neighbourhood in Beirut’s southern suburb early on Oct 1.This came just hours after Lebanese troops pulled back from the border with Israel late on Sept 30 as the ground invasion looked imminent.

Lebanon is facing one of the most dangerous stages in its history, caretaker prime minister Najib Mikati said on Oct 1 during a meeting with UN organisations and ambassadors of donor countries. Lebanon’s army has historically stayed on the sidelines of major conflicts with Israel, and in the last year of hostilities has not fired on the Israeli military.

An Israeli strike in Lebanon early on Oct 1 targeted Mounir Maqdah, commander of the Lebanese branch of the Palestinian Fatah movement’s military wing, the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade, according to two Palestinian security officials. The strike hit a building in the crowded Ain al-Hilweh Palestinian refugee camp near the southern city of Sidon, the sources said.

Israel in response launched a massive assault on Hamas in Gaza, reducing most of the Palestinian territory to rubble, displacing most of its 2.3 million people and killing more than 41,300 Palestinians, according to the Gaza health ministry. The intensive air strikes have eliminated several Hezbollah commanders but also killed about 1,000 civilians and forced one million to flee their homes, according to the Lebanese government.
