Their argument involves another special distance from the center of a black hole. Outside the event horizon, the black hole’s gravity bends the path of passing light, and at a certain distance it bends into a closed circle. That distance defines the black hole’s light ring. Photons passing within it spiral toward the event horizon; those outside it are merely deflected.
However, physicists have suspected any ultracompact with a light ring would be unstable. Unlike a black hole, any material object dense enough to make one light ring must form a second, one inside the other. That’s because the center of a black hole is a pinhole in spacetime, but within a material object spacetime remains unblemished.
