It’s Okay If You’re Not Okay With In Person Holiday Gatherings

We're still in a deadly global pandemic.

. And since there are still millions of unvaccinated people in this country, and my baby isn’t eligible for the vaccine, I’m choosing not to travel to see family this year—or spend time indoors with nearby friends—so I can protect my little one against COVID-19 and a possibly even-more-contagious strain.

But that doesn’t mean I’m happy about my low-key holiday plans. I deeply miss seeing my friends and family, and after 21 months of isolation that’s included pregnancy and new motherhood, I find myself desperately craving friendship and comradery. But my instinct to keep my son safe is overpowering my desire to connect in person, at least for now

To say I’m still in the process of understanding and accepting my feelings and current reality is the understatement of the season, but I’m acknowledging that I’m struggling and finding ways to feel better: working with my, seeking virtual hangouts with other new pandemic moms, and continuing to connect with my family and friends via Zoom and old-school phone calls .

Another thing that’s helping me get through the holidays is simply knowing that there are other people out there in the same boat. If you aren’t yet ready to celebrate in real life because, like me, you have a kid under 5, areyourself, want to protect a loved one who is ineligible to get vaccinated, or literally any other reason, I want you to know that you’re not alone. I see you, I understand you, and I’m sending you the biggest virtual hug.

one day, but for now, I’m celebrating with you from the safety of my home—and hoping you can find some holiday cheer in yours.
