Growing pains are bound to hurt. This is the last time of year they can be sufficiently eased behind the scenes. The days ahead look hugely important.

Stout, unerring man-to-man defense was the foundation of so much of Indiana’s success in Mike Woodson’s first season. The Hoosiers finished narrowly ahead of Illinois with the best adjusted defensive efficiency in the Big Ten in league games. Their smothering ball pressure and excellent rim protection got them their first NCAA tournament appearance in six years last March.

The Hoosiers, to their credit, were excellent defensively against a North Carolina team that has rebounded at that end of the floor after a four-game losing streak and now features one ofBut IU’s win at Xavier also came despite some glaring defensive breakdowns, and despite the fact their sample size is currently watered down by the weakness of the nonconference home schedule, the Hoosiers are roughly equivalent on a per-possession basis to where they were a year ago.

Even as he has struggled, at times, to find his shot, Hood-Schifino has made a consistent and substantial impact elsewhere. In terms of averages, he’s the only player in the top three on his team in each points, rebounds, assists and steals per game.

They’re hitting 3s at an average more than three points higher than a year ago, with more scorers contributing and players like Hood-Schifino, Tamar Bates and Miller Kopp improving. They’re finishing 2s at an excellent rate, with Jackson-Davis leading the way. Even with the giveaways at Kansas they boast a top-100 turnover rate nationally, and all this is happening while Indiana is playing faster offensively than it has in years.

Not always. Kansas was ugly in virtually every sense. But not every team in the Big Ten will have Kansas’ length, or its homecourt atmosphere. . Despite missing three games because of minor injuries, he’s on pace to finish this season, at minimum, top-five all-time in rebounds and points. If he stays healthy, he’s a shoo-in to break Jeff Newton’s career blocks record.
