A popular Riverside mainstay cafe and a restaurant known for Chinese countryside cuisine closed while two new bakeries led December's restaurant news.

Southern Roots Filling Station

Citing uncertainty over escalating rent and other lease issues, restaurant owner Mariah Goelz and her husband J.P. Salvat announced on social media that Southern Roots Filling Station would close effective Dec. 31. They opened the cafe at 1275 King St. in November 2014. It had evolved from a farmer's market pop-up three years earlier. The cafe"has truly been a dream come to fruition," they said in a Facebook post thanking their customers and the community for their support.
