The helmer continues to live with his family in Iran and has had to rebuild his career after the ban on “A Respectable Family.” Bahkshi attended the Sundance Screenwriters Lab in 2016 with “Yalda,” and also attended script labs at Turin, Groupe Ouest and La Fabrique Cinéma. He says that “Yalda” reminds him of works such as Sidney Lumet’s “The Verdict” in terms of its dramatic tension, mixing elements of a thriller and suspense.
