A Cambodian-Chinese citizen imprisoned in Thailand, She Zhijiang, claims he's been subjected to inhumane treatment since alleging he was a Chinese spy while fighting extradition to China.

A jailed gambling tycoon fighting extradition to China has reportedly received 'inhumane treatment' in a Thai prison after claiming to be a Chinese spy, according to his lawyers. She Zhijiang , a China -born citizen of Cambodia, was arrested in Bangkok in 2022 on an international warrant issued by Beijing, which accuses him of running illegal online gambling operations in Southeast Asia. She and his legal team maintain that the case is politically motivated.

In a letter to Interpol dated January 9, 2023, seen by Reuters, She's lawyers, Clara Gerard-Rodriguez and Pierre-Olivier Sur of the France-based firm FTMS Avocats, allege that he has been subjected to solitary confinement, chained, denied medical treatment for a spinal injury, and prevented from contacting his family. They describe the treatment as 'particularly inhumane' and 'institutional' human rights violations. She's lawyers claim he was physically assaulted by officers and inmates in late October 2022 after being accused of violating prison discipline. He is now wheelchair-bound due to the injuries sustained in the incident, according to the lawyers. Additionally, they state that Chinese embassy officials visited She twice in December 2022 without his consent, attempting to persuade him to return to China. They claim these officials suggested his family and friends might require assistance from the embassy, which She interpreted as a threat. The lawyers argue that the alleged mistreatment and violations by Chinese authorities should prevent his extradition.China's Foreign Ministry, however, maintains that She is a Chinese national and a 'key figure in online gambling and telecom fraud crimes', asserting that the evidence against him is 'conclusive'. They welcomed the Thai court's decision to extradite him, viewing it as a significant step in Thai-Chinese law enforcement cooperation. She's lawyers are appealing the extradition ruling. The Thai Ministry of Justice declined to comment, referring queries to the Department of Corrections, which did not immediately respond. She Zhijiang previously headed a gambling empire that developed a $15 billion casino, entertainment, and tourism complex called Shwe Kokko on the Myanmar-Thai border. The group, Yatai International Holdings Group, also had investments in Cambodia and the Philippines
