TOKYO : Japan is arranging subsidies that could be worth around 15 billion yen to South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co for a chip facility it is considering setting up near Tokyo, a source with direct knowledge of the matter said.
The tech firm's investment would come at a time of easing tensions between Japan and South Korea as the United States urges its allies to work together to counter China's rising might in chips and other technologies. Japan's economy ministry said that no decisions have been made regarding any subsidy for Samsung and no specific proposal has been received from the company.Japan's Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on Thursday plans to meet with executives from leading chip firms including Samsung to strengthen multilateral cooperation.
