The last time Russian military aircraft circled Japan was in 2019.
- Japan’s military said it scrambled fighter jets on Sept 12 after two Russian patrol planes flew in a circle around the country, but there was no violation of Japanese airspace.
From Sept 12 morning to afternoon, the Russian Tu-142 aircraft flew from the sea between Japan and South Korea towards the southern Okinawa region, a defence ministry statement said.
