One statistic earning its keep has been that the average UK full-time salary, according to the Office for National Statistics, is £34,963, a third of the sum the Chancellor described as not “huge”. That only takes us so far, however. It is a national average, and we know that the United Kingdom suffers from particularly acute economic imbalance between London and the South East on one hand and more or less everywhere else on the other.
An argument about Hunt’s tone may be temporarily satisfying but, like junk food, in the long run without much benefit. What is “huge”? How far do we think the sum he mentioned does go? People from other parts of the country saying they earn substantially less than £100,000 is as true as it is irrelevant, because that was not what he was talking about.
