By signing RB Le'Veon Bell. the Jets believe they now have a franchise quarterback and a franchise running back at a reasonable total price. Bell's ability should help Sam Darnold's development
The Jets haven’t gotten a No. 1 receiver this off-season. But they certainly got themselves a No. 1 running back. And at a reasonable price, relatively speaking, in today's NFL.
Now there are potential pitfalls, as there are in any signing. The first is whether the 27-year-old Bell accrued any rust on his body while sitting out the 2018 campaign. Yes, he stayed in shape, but as NFL coaches and players often say, there is a difference between being in shape and being in football shape.
Interestingly, Bell’s deal, when broken down on a per-year basis, averages out to $13.125 million. That is less than he would have made last season if he had relented and played under the franchise tag for Pittsburgh. That would have been worth $14.5 million. As noted before, his recently being reported as having been diagnosed with arthritisRunning back isn’t considered as much of a premium position in terms of money as it used to be now that the NFL has become so passing-oriented.
