New information on payment from Delaney to FAI disclosed
“There was a board meeting on Monday 19 June 2017 and the €100,000 payment did not arise.” Ultimately the board was informed of the payment on the 4th of March this year, following initial queries on the payment by The Sunday Times.
Mr Conway has also told the Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Sport and Tourism on Wednesday morning the problem that arose was “exceptional” and the FAI would ensure it would never happen again. Mr Conway said a cash flow issue arose in April 2017 and that Mr Delaney wrote a cheque for €100,000. When a creditor made a demand for payment, the cheque was lodged in the bank and the payment to the creditor honoured.“The board acknowledged the situation was exceptional,” he said, adding “repayment was made by [the] Association on June 16th to Mr Delaney.
Mr Conway then outlined to the committee the new internal control processes that have been put in place to ensure that situation does not arise again.
