A judge ruled that the case still has to go through several procedural steps.

: A judge on Thursday denied a motion from House Democrats to fast-track a lawsuit to get a hold of President Donald Trump’s sought-after tax returns.

U.S. District Judge Trevor McFadden, a Trump appointee, said he wouldn’t expedite the case despite Democrats on the House Ways and Means Committee arguing that “time is of the essence” and not speeding up the process would “unjustifiably delay resolution of this case.” McFadden said he denied the motion because the case still needs to go through several procedural steps, including a hearing on motion to dismiss the lawsuit.

But McFadden didn’t shut the door on a similar motion being granted in the future.”It may be appropriate to expedite this matter at some point, but not now," he said.: In denying the motion, the judge said the Trump administration still has time to respond to the lawsuit and that he is waiting for other courts to decide on similar cases for guidance. Additionally, it hasn’t been ruled on whether the case will involve discovery or whether all the proper parties have joined the case.

Democrats in New York and California, too, have passed laws to try and get his tax returns, but such actions have been delayed as the Trump administration sues to block those measures in court.
