'I do all these things to make me feel more comfortable in my own skin, but really it's making me more uncomfortable when I take it off because I'm constantly masking myself. I wanted to show people how I am versus how I could be.'

spoke to Teen Vogue's entertainment news editor P. Claire Dodson about the inspiration behind her new song and music video “Body” and her own experiences with learning to love herself.

I wanted to write a song about my insecurities because I can't be the only one that feels this way. I got in the studio to work on “Body,” and I just started thinking about those moments. I sang, "I'm sorry I'm a b*tch to you," which is now the first line of the song addressing the negative internal dialogue I have with myself in those moments. Nobody really talks about that intense toxic relationship with yourself.

In the video for “Body,” I came up with the idea to start in a bunch of layers, and by the end I'm completely stripped. The second verse of the song is me talking about how I cover up. I wear big, oversized sweatshirts so that I can cover my body. I do all these things to make me feel more comfortable in my own skin, but really it's making me more uncomfortable when I take it off because I'm constantly masking myself. I wanted to show people how I am versus how I could be.

I think everybody goes through phases. There are spaces where I’m really comfortable in my skin and spaces when I’m not. If I'm in love with someone and they make me feel sexy, then I'm like, "Alright, sick." There are times when I like my body, sure, and then there's other times where I aspire for a better one. I'm not always going to love myself. I'm not always going to feel comfortable with myself. If somebody loves themselves all the time, f*cking amazing.
