It is winning fans as it supports worthy causes and promotes Filipino values.

P-pop group SB19 stops traffic to give a surprise performance for their fans at the Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles, in July 2023.

P-pop is contemporary Filipino pop music that fuses Philippine languages and culture with heavy influences from K-pop. “Karen Davila, your comment was disappointing. P-pop is being known globally now because SB19 spearheaded it to what it is now. They are trailblazers,” said X user @vytel99. The virtual tussle did not come as a surprise to Filipino popular culture instructor Anne Trinidad, who started teaching an elective class on P-pop for the first time in August at the Ateneo de Manila University in Quezon City, near the capital Manila.

Experts say the P-pop phenomenon gives listeners a peek into Filipino culture and is a testament to the evolution of the Philippine music industry, where artists have long been known to use their platforms to advance causes and social commentary. While it is difficult to pin down an exact number, P-pop fans in the Philippines and abroad are believed to number in the low millions, experts say. The local Instagram accounts of two of the most popular P-pop groups in the country, SB19 and Bini, have more than one million and 2.1 million followers, respectively.

SB19’s rise to the mainstream was propelled by Go Up. Its music video has garnered 14 million-plus views on YouTube since its release in 2019. The group has since produced a string of hits including Gento, which even had US dancer-choreographer Chachi Gonzales and Eunhyuk of K-pop’s Super Junior taking on its viral TikTok dance challenge last year.

At a concert earlier in 2024 at the University of the Philippines, Bini’s leader, Jhoanna Robles, spoke on stage about the longstanding issue of ancestral lands being taken away from indigenous groups – an issue that student-activists at the university have been fighting for.
