Kam's Roast Express at Ion Orchard is closing after being reportedly kicked out by food court operator Food Republic, despite strong sales. Executive director Robert Chua criticized the operator's actions and announced his group will no longer work with BreadTalk or Food Republic.
Kam's Roast Express, located in the Food Opera food court at Ion Orchard , is set to close by the end of June following reports that it has been "kicked out" by the food court operator.
The announcement was made by Robert Chua, executive director and TV veteran, in a Facebook post on June 2. According to Chua, the stall, which consistently ranked among the top three in daily sales, was removed despite having accepted what was presented as the operator's final offer. That acceptance was later rejected after about a month. Chua expressed disappointment, accusing some F&B operators of acting in bad faith through unreasonable demands, interference, and bullying.
He added that removing a top-performing stall and rejecting an accepted offer does not make good business sense. In response, his F&B group has decided to cease all business with Food Republic and its parent company, BreadTalk. Existing contracts for Kam's Roast and Ju Xing Fish at The Food Place by Food Republic in Raffles City will not be renewed once they expire in two years.
Kam's Roast was introduced to Singapore by Chua in 2016, with the Ion Orchard express outlet opening in June 2021. The brand specializes in Cantonese barbecued meats and currently operates one main outlet at Jewel Changi Airport and two express kiosks, including the Ion location and another at Raffles City. The origins of Kam's Roast trace back to Hong Kong, where it was founded as Yung Kee Restaurant by Kam Shui Fai and Kam Kinseng Kwan Sing.
