ASTANA - Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev shocked the nation on Tuesday by announcing his resignation after nearly 30 years in power.
In a broadcast address to the nation, Mr Nazarbayev said he had decided to step down and that the chairman of the Kazakh senate would take over. The announcement came less than a month after Mr Nazarbayev sacked his government, citing a lack of economic development despite the country's vast energy resources.
The president promised more than US$5 billion over the next three years to boost the salaries of public employees, increase assistance to low-income households and improve electricity and gas supplies to rural areas. The gleaming futuristic new capital Astana, built in the years since independence, symbolised Mr Nazarbayev's drive to put the country on the map.
