King Charles III has decided not to reside at Buckingham Palace following the completion of a decade-long, 369 million-pound refurbishment. The decision, announced during a briefing on royal finances, positions the palace as the ceremonial and operational hub of the monarchy while the King and Queen Camilla will make their primary home at Clarence House.
This move is intended to increase public access to the historic building, allowing for more events, expanded tours, and a greater number of visitors. Senior royal official James Chalmers emphasized that Buckingham Palace will remain "Monarchy HQ" and the "crown jewel of our national buildings.
" The extensive renovation, which began in 2017, addresses outdated plumbing, wiring, and heating systems to ensure the palace can serve the monarchy for another half-century. With 775 rooms, the palace has long been the London home of British monarchs since Queen Victoria, hosting state dinners and serving as the focal point for national celebrations on its famous balcony.
By opting to live elsewhere, the King aims to transform the palace into a more publicly accessible institution, though royal watchers like author Ed Owens urge careful planning to avoid the building lying vacant for significant periods. Owens expressed hope for a "more radical proposal" regarding the palace's future role. In a separate but related announcement, King Charles became the first British monarch to publicly disclose his personal tax payments.
He paid 12.9 million pounds in income and capital gains taxes for the 2024-25 fiscal year, an increase from 11.7 million pounds the previous year. Prince William, the Prince of Wales, also released his tax details, showing a payment of 7.76 million pounds, down from 8.34 million pounds. These disclosures provide the public with a clearer picture of the King's personal wealth, derived largely from his private estates, Balmoral and Sandringham.
The move to transparency is seen as an effort to distance the monarchy from the scandal surrounding Prince Andrew, now known as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, and to reinforce the institution's accountability.
