On any given night in 2022, more than 14,000 unaccompanied women in L.A. County experienced homelessness.

, women face unique challenges. And given their increase in numbers over the years – in particular, women who aren’t accompanied by a partner or child – it’s critical that service providers and policy makers are aware of the hurdles they face to better provide for their needs., the first study of its kind in the county and the largest study in the nation that exclusively looked at the needs of homeless women.

Unsheltered homeless women also reported difficulties accessing bathrooms, showers and laundry facilities to meet basic hygiene needs – a challenge that’s particularly concerning when they’re menstruating. “To that end, we must stand together, ensure that women experiencing homelessness are seen and heard, and give them the support they need to reclaim their lives with dignity and hope,” Solis added. The study, conducted by the D.C.-based Urban Institute and Pasadena-based Hub for Urban Initiatives, was commissioned by the Los Angeles County Homeless Initiative and Downtown Women’s Center, a housing and service provider in skid row.

According to the report, on any given night in 2022, more than 14,000 women in L.A. County experienced homelessness as individuals, meaning they weren’t accompanied by a partner, child or other dependents. That’s 68% of all women who were homeless and 20% of the county’s overall homeless population, a number that’s been growing locally and nationally.

Sofia Herrera, director of research, planning and policy for the Pasadena-based Hub for Urban Initiatives, and one of the authors of the report, said personal safety and a place to store their possessions while staying in a shelter were high on survey respondents’ list of priorities. She also noted that two in five respondents indicated that they would prefer to be housed only with other women.
