'Very shortly here, fentanyl is going to be the new number one cause of overdose deaths as far as controlled substances are concerned,' said LASD Captain Brandon Dean, who works on the Overdose Response Task Force. He says that deaths from controlled substances spiked more than 200% from 2018 to 2021.
A task force devoted to preventing overdose deaths in Los Angeles County has made a harrowing prediction as the amount of fentanyl-related incidents continues to skyrocket nationwide.
Formed in July, the task force consists of investigators from a number of different bureaus, working to prevent drug overdose deaths from the source. "Four years ago, it was 650 meth and 263 fentanyl," Dean said."So, basically, fentanyl has gone up seven times in four years."
