House lawmakers want Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos to testify before Congress after a report that the company allegedly uses sales data from third-party sellers to gain a competitive advantage against them
In a letter dated Friday, House lawmakers said the report from the Wall Street Journal appeared to contradict Amazon's earlier testimony that the company does not use individual seller data to compete with them. Amazon had told lawmakers last year that it uses aggregated seller data.Amazon previously told the Journal that it is investigating the allegations internally and that employees caught using individual seller data would be in violation of company policies.
David Cicilline, who heads the panel's antitrust subcommittee and is leading an antitrust probe of the tech industry. The letter also faulted Amazon for what the lawmakers said was a failure to cooperate swiftly enough with the antitrust investigation, saying Amazon has"not made an adequate production" of evidence in response to committee requests. Congress has frequently asked tech CEOs to testify in recent years as scrutiny of their privacy practices and market power has grown.
