Leaked Amazon all-hands messages suggest 'single-digit' percentage cuts to 180,000-employee AWS, which still means at least 1,800 could get laid off
Employees hoped a cloud unit all-hands would shed some light, but it provided little information.Amazon's latest round of layoffs will include"a small, single-digit percentage" of the employees in the company's massive Amazon Web Services cloud unit, according to leaked internal messages and employees present at the unit's all-hands meeting., on top of the 18,000 layoffs the company announced earlier this year.
AWS has not disclosed how large its cloud unit is, but one person familiar with the workforce estimated it has about 180,000 employees, which would suggest at least 1,800 jobs could be cut from the division. An Amazon spokesperson said this estimated size of its cloud workforce is inaccurate but declined to comment further.
"AWS: The business is strong. Also AWS: To save the business we must lay off thousands of people," was how one employee commented in response to the all-hands in an internal Slack channel message viewed by Insider.
